Idiot boss
Thursday, March 29, 2007
My boss is an idiot. I know I’m not the first to say this, but I just need to get this off my chest. Most of this rant will be very work specific, so apologies if some of this goes over your head. For you fellow auditors, you might get a kick out of this.

So this boss, or “bro” as I like to call him (another story behind that name) is going on his third or fourth year as manager. I’ve never worked with the guy before, but I’ve heard stories about him. Mostly that he’s a nice guy, but lazy as hell. My current client engagement has been out of town and I’ve been out here for the last 6 weeks now. This is my last week of fieldwork, and finally bro decides to show up and start reviewing. I swear, this has never happened to me before, my old manager used to be out in the field with us for at least a week or two. So you’re telling me you’re finally going to review my work, leave me a bunch of review comments, and I have like… 3 more days to finish clearing them? Are you kidding me!

So why hasn’t he come out here before to start reviewing early? “Dude I’ve been so busy, I’m juggling like three different clients right now, I have this comfort letter to issue, blah blah blah.” Okay fine, if you’re busy you’re busy. But seriously, now that I’ve seen this guy’s work habits, it’s no wonder he’s got a lot of shit to do. He’s probably the only person who can turn a 2 hour task into 8 client chargeable hours. Then he has the nerve to complain about our budget, and why the team is putting so many hours into the job. Well excuse me, why don’t you show me our job’s hours charged and let me see how many hours you’ve been charging to the job… because you shouldn’t be charging anything for the last 5 weeks if you never freakin came out here. Surprise surprise, he doesn’t want to show me and my cosenior the hours charged. I bet this moron has been charging hours on this job even though he’s been working on other crap for the last 5 weeks. No wonder our budget is messed up, his chargeable rate is higher than the rest of the team.

So this fool rolls in today at 9:45am. I’m thinking, okay maybe he got up early and worked a little from the hotel. No, he strolls in and admits he just slept in. Hello! It’s flippin busy season, we’re working like 12 hour days, and you show up almost 2 hours later than the rest of the team? He comes in…. spends an hour checking emails and calling his other jobs, then says “so where we going for lunch?” We break for lunch, where I have to listen to him whine about how he’s working 16 hours a day. Yah freakin right, how is that possible when you don’t show up for work until 10am? Then you complain that this job has two seniors, while your other job has no seniors. Well whose fault is that bro? Yours. You’re the manager, it’s your job to appropriately staff your jobs.

Today he spent about 2.5 hours logging in his expense receipts, then at 4pm hands me 3 pages of review comments. “Can you clear up most of these by tomorrow morning before the partner comes out by noon?” Okay, now I’m mad. How dare he not look at my work until now, take forever getting through everything because he’s goofing off, and then expect me to give a quick turnaround. And finally, at the end of the day, around 8pm we’re about to leave, and bro realizes he forgot to send one more email out. So he boots up his computer again, and the file he sends is huge, so we’re sitting there for another good 15 minutes waiting for his dang computer to send the dang email. As we’re packing up, he asks who is joining him for dinner. Well hell no, not me. I said no, I already had some of my leftover pasta from lunch around 6pm. He said “well fine then I’ll just go to a fancy restaurant with so and so and we’ll put your names down so we can spend more.” Okay. N-O. That is just wrong. He has no right to put my name down on that dinner expense if I wasn’t there. I told him this. I said “Bro. Don’t do it. I’m telling you right now, it’s unethical and I don’t want any part of it, you better not put my name down.” What an idiot.

Don't you hate it when this happens to you?
Thursday, March 22, 2007
One of the biggest problems I have during the busy season of my job is squeezing time to work out. Being out of town for the last few weeks hasn't been as bad as my local jobs. Still, I find myself getting out at 7, and by the time I'm done with dinner and situated in my hotel room it's pretty much 8-8:30pm. Not exactly the perfect time to go jogging at night.

So the other day I decided shoot... I need to get my a$$ out of bed and work out in the morning. After all, I'm in the beautiful desert, staying at a nice resort that has an awesome 24 hr fitness center. So I got up around 6:20am (I have no idea how I managed it) and put on my workout clothes. I actually debated whether or not to put on makeup (not a ton, but just a little of my bare minerals) because man oh man, I was looking beat. My face was dry, eyes were crusty, and I had a few lines on my cheek from sleeping on my side. Basically I was looking "toe up," as my girls Dylan and Holly would say. I shrugged off the thought and gathered my hair up in a sloppy ponytail. I thought to myself "no one has ever been in the fitness room the last times you went at night, and if someone is there, most likely it will be a senior citizen."

So off I go jogging to the fitness center, which is quite a jog from my room. As I'm getting closer, I notice a guy standing next to the golf carts just leaning casually by the steps/entryway to the fitness club. Ohhhh my goodness. This guy was HOT. He was wearing a polo shirt and khakis, probably a golf instructor working at the resort, waiting for someone to show up for their golf lesson. I immediately regretted not having freshened up more. At least put on some face lotion! I still had the freakin lines on my face, and I swear I could not have looked more hideous.

"Good morning m'aam."

"Good morning."

"You heading to the fitness center?"

"Uhh yah" (as I shyly smile)

"Do you know where to go?"

Yah at this point, I'm thinking... well yes I know where to go, but I might as well let him point it out for me.

"No, is this it that way, or on the other side?"

"You go straight down there, through the archway then down the end of the hall."

"Great! Thanks for your help!" (oops, did my voice just get a tad too peppy?)

"No problem. Glad I could help. Enjoy your workout."

I quickly rushed off, my face probably flushed and feeling all giddy inside, yet embarrassed as heck. *sigh* I've been here for 5 weeks now and the ONE time I see a guy under age 50 (with the added bonus of being flippin hot) I'm looking worse than my driver's license picture. Well, looking on the bright side, I'd say if that's not motivation to get up early to work out, I don't know what is. Tomorrow morning I'm gonna head over there again, but this time I'll make sure I'm looking decent. Knowing my luck though, gorgeous golf instructor man won't be there when I'm looking better. Dang, the irony.

st. patricks day
Monday, March 19, 2007
i don't even know where to begin with this one. for the last two years i've celebrated SPD with my coworkers while out of town on assignment. we go to the yardhouse every year and enjoy green beer, corned beef, and shepard's pie. this year i was a bit disappointed that SPD fell on a saturday. since we go back home every friday afternoon, we decided to celebrate thursday night at the usual yardhouse. i opened the menu, craving the taste of corned beef, cabbage, and carrots... and lo and behold, there is the special green SPD menu! ah hah, not so fast daphne. the menu is set for friday and saturday only. well darn, how dare they tease me like that by putting the green menu in there. well, i decided to make the best out of it and order something else.

now most ppl don't know this about me, but i am a light weight. now, now i know what you're thinking and believe me, you have to witness it to believe it. i can't finish ONE drink. yes, one. i get about halfway done, and the rest remains either diluted with melted ice cubes or finished off by someone else. well i ordered a mojito, and halfway done, i was ready to pass out. my coworker called our old manager and apparently i left a wacky message. the next morning he emailed me saying "looks like someone had half a beer last night at the yardhouse." ah good times, he knows me too well.

fast forward to saturday. so my girlfriends wanted to get all dressed up and have drinks (in my case, one) at the Ritz, then go salsa dancing around 9:30. as usual, i ordered my ONE drink, and about halfway there i started to get flushed and my heart was beating fast. i pretty much got sleepy by the time we left. if it were up to me i woulda gone back to my girlfriend's apt and just crashed. unfortunately, we had to make a little side trip before going back to her apt.... to the ER.

one of the girls apparently never drank that much before (she had like.. ONE drink just like me) and she went to the restroom by herself. well about 10 minutes later she came out with this big cut right below her bottom lip. she bit herself, and it was deep. i didn't really get a good look, but apparently it was so deep you could practically see her gums (sorry to get so graphic). i'm thinking, good grief, how would anyone bite themselves so hard? my guess is that she passed out and hit her head on the sink or something, causing her to bite her own lip. it was bleeding. bad. we drove to the ER and she got stitches, both inside and outside. and then there i was, in the waiting room just passed out. i felt so bad that my friends had to take care of me and our plans to go salsa dancing went down the drain. our friend came out and thank God she was okay. we drove to my friend's apt where they put me in pjs and i pretty much fell asleep instantly.

the next morning my friend with the stitches seemed ok, she's on a liquid diet for now. i'm just grateful that i have such awesome friends who didn't once complain that the evening didn't go as planned. this experience makes me so grateful for them, and it's probably gonna make me avoid drinking for a long time.

Too much alone time
Tuesday, March 13, 2007
I haven't seen Benny since Valentines Day. I've called him twice since then, but both times he was out of town. He forgot our 5 year anniversary, and hasn't tried to contact me since. Despite all this, I've been trying to move forward with my life. Each day I keep myself busy with work, chatting with friends, exercising, and reading. Because of all this crap I'm going through, there are times when I just want to be alone. I don't want my mom asking me why I'm not seeing Benny that weekend, and I most definitely don't want to see my brother and his new gf acting so lovey dovey. Being alone is good sometimes, but it's also the only time I allow myself to think about Benny and therefore become depressed.

This is my fourth consecutive week out of town. My first two weeks I was out here by myself. I thought last week and this week would be better with my whole team out. As it turns out, they all want to do their own thing after work, be it study, work out, buy some food to bring back to their room.

So here I am, in my hotel room (I've hopped to four different hotels in four weeks) watching American Idol. I don't know why, but I just watched a performance where some girl sang the words "I've been missing you," and I just lost it. I thought about how much I miss him and the tears just started coming out. I just began to sob, not just a few tears sliding down my cheek, I'm talking about crying so hard you're taking shuddering breaths.

I wish I weren't alone right now. I've had enough of alone time. I wish I had all my cousins here, my gal pals, or just a shoulder to cry on. Or maybe I should just stop listening to music with lyrics about being lonely or missing someone.

Please excuse the mess
Wednesday, March 07, 2007
I've been wanting to update my blog template FOREVER and ever. I've just been so darn busy, I don't really have time. So please excuse the appearance of my blog for the next couple of days (hopefully not weeks!).

This is just a place holder until I have some time to really sit down and get crackin on my blog.

I'm still out of town on assignment, been extremely busy with work. I'm hoping this busy season will end already. I'm so exhausted.
