Thoughts on an Office Memo
Friday, December 07, 2007
The following email was sent to all personnel in our local firm office. [content edited to remove names/specifics] Yet another reason I think HR has way too much time on their hands. I am now going to entertain bore you with my thoughts (mostly sarcasm) on this email....

I am proud to announce the opening of the first Study Room in the [SoCal area] Office, and perhaps the first in the Pacific South West (PSW) sub-area, and maybe the entire firm. Wow, this is big time. The concept of a "study room" being the first in the PSW, and maybe the entire firm. No, no. It could very well be the first in-office study room in the UNIVERSE.

The idea was the brainchild of [John Doe], an [audit] Staff in our office. Brainchild huh? Someone's bustin out the thesarus...

Like many, [John] found it challenging to balance his work responsibilities with his studies (...upcoming CPA Exam) and thought how beneficial it would be to have a room within the office that could be designated as a study room where he could study before and after work. It's called a conference room people. We have plenty on all three floors. Or how about, study at home? The library? Starbucks? I'd also like to point out that we have several single person work stations (think of a bigger phone booth) where most people go to make personal phone calls or work for a few hours.

In [John]'s case, he prefers to study for his upcoming exam for a couple hours before his engagement team arrives in order to have quiet time to study before a good day's work. Which I'm assuming is between 6am and 8:30am. Are you saying that our office is packed with people during these hours and you can't find a single room to study quietly? He presented his idea to [partner in the firm], who asked for my assistance in identifying and preparing such a room. Preparing how?

Effective Monday, December 10, Room F804 (the old tax assembly room on 8) will be our Study Room. The room has a table, chairs, a telephone, and a data cable with hub to accommodate up to 6 connections at once. A room with table and chairs? Genius! Why didn't I think of that? And not 5, but SIX connections? I'm bursting with excitement. Because everyone knows you can't have quiet study time without 5 other people sharing an internet hub with you. The room will be available to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations needed, however, please keep in mind that the purpose of the room is for quiet, study time, as opposed to a meeting room, lunch room, or break room.

I believe this Study Room speaks to the firm's commitment to our people, especially to those studying for the CPA Exam or any other certifications [our] people are trying to achieve, and shows how [the firm] is dedicated to our personal and professional success. It's a room people. How about you stop working us to death so I can actually have time to study? A big thank you goes out to [John Doe] for his suggestion. I'm embarrassed for John Doe. Please let me know if you have any questions or additional suggestions regarding our Study Room. I just did.

Amen! Let's make it your brain child to have the employees work less hours so they can study for their exams and not have to take it 3 times (like my mom's friend's son)!!!!! LOL
