Vegas Trip revisited... #11
Tuesday, July 31, 2007

On last week's Thursday Thirteen I had mentioned on point #11 that I wanted to avoid getting annoyed with my brother (let's just call him Doug). In Vegas I actually wasn't annoyed with him per say, more like... annoyed with him and his gf together, as a couple. Let me explain...

A little background: so Doug had one girlfriend prior to this current one. They went out for about 5 years and my parents loved her. She was polite, never PDA with my brother, knew how to respect my parents while she was over at the house. They ended up breaking up and it was awhile before Doug started dating again. He and his current gf, Janice, have been dating for about six months. If you ask me, it's going way too fast. Remember when I was going through my breakup with Benny, and Doug wasn't even there for me? Yah, it's because he was so in luuuurve with his new gf that he pretty much blew me off. Ugh. Now they live together. Whatever.

Anyway, going back to Vegas. Man, these two are so PDA that it makes me sick. Not just holding hands all the time. I'm talking about her constant petting, smooching, clinging, etc. Yuck. So we go to the pool this weekend and we're having ourselves a good ole time. We start heading back to the car so everyone could go back and change in their hotel room. As we're walking to the parking structure, I notice that she put a white see-through tank top over her black bikini (hmm) and on her feet.... high heels. Like straight up hooker high heels. Uh huuhhhhh. Okay seriously, who does that? Tell me please, because I need to know if I'm the only one thinking that that is just TRASHY. She's not exactly a model either. I'm not trying to be offensive to anyone else who might be reading this, but there's no other way to describe what I was thinking in my head except for "omg, it's like looking at miss piggy from the back and seeing her in a bikini and high heels." Yes, I said it. I know that was mean, but come on now. The rest of us were in flip flops, cuz ya know... that's what you wear when you get out of the swimming pool. You don't put on high heels.

Moving along.... we get to the hotel room where Doug, Janice, and some other cousins/friends were staying. I wasn't staying at this hotel but went along anyway to have lunch with them. Second disgusting thing: their hotel room was a smoking room. Okay, I know it's Vegas and it smells like smoke all over the casinos but dude, can we at least have the room you're sleeping in smell somewhat fresh and clean? I swear Doug was almost on a full recovery to quit smoking, then once he got with Janice, he started smoking like a chimney. Ugh. So one by one each person takes their turn using the shower while the rest of us are watching tv. Janice went next and I keep talking to my cousins and watching tv. Then all of a sudden I look around the room and do a mental headcount. Someone is missing. I ask "Hey where did Doug go?" and nobody said anything. Suddenly I hear giggling from the bathroom shower.... Oh HELL no you did not just go in there with her! That's just NASTY and WRONG. I swear I was so disgusted by it I wanted to barf. Is my brother on crack? I'm your freakin sister and I'm in the same room along with your cousins and friends, and you jump in the shower with her? Double ugh. I get so pissed off every time I think about it. I'm telling you, who does that? Who?!

I love my brother, but sometimes I just want to smack him upside the head.

13 things I want to avoid on this Vegas trip
Thursday, July 26, 2007

1. Working. Yes, I'm bringing my work laptop with me, but it's only so I don't get overwhelmed with emails when I return. I will be swamped come Monday on a new client, so I better not be disturbed until then. *crossing fingers*

2. Buffets. They were fun when I was younger, but seriously I've lost the desire to eat at buffets. I always feel like crap after I eat, I most definitely have to visit the toilet more than once, and it's expensive. I'd rather eat at a nicer steak place or something. Let's face it, eating pizza, crab legs, crepes, chinese noodles, and prime rib all in one sitting just can't be good for ya.

3. Crowded pools. Hah, wishful thinking I know. I don't even want to get in my bathing suit, but it's about time I even out my tan and lay out by the pool with a good book.

4. Seeing someone I know. Especially from high school. I can't stand that. My best friend ran into a semi-archnemesis of mine from HS at some club in Vegas last week, and they both pretended not to know each other. Awkward.

5. Cab rides. I really hope I'll be able to either walk wherever we're going or we can take the cars. I really don't want to have to pay those cab fares.

6. No game plan. We're going for my cousin's 21st birthday, and it's a combination of his work friends and us (the cousins). I hope we're not going to spend the entire weekend "winging it" because it drives me batty when nobody decides things and I end up eating dinner at 10pm.

7. Ghetto places. Now I know this is going to make me sound like a snob, but most of my cousin's coworkers are pretty ghetto. They would probably be content with eating McDonalds every meal. Hell no, that it so not happening. I can be pretty cheap at times, but when you go to Vegas, you really can't be stingy about every thing. We've been planning this trip for like 2 years now, and if you haven't saved enough money by now, sorry. I'm gonna be mad if we eat junk all weekend and I'm determined to go to some nice places.

8. Getting drunk/throwing up. That's never fun. And it's not very attractive too. Two drinks and I'm done.

9. Cell phone dying. I broke my home charger so all I have is my car charger. It's fully charged right now but hopefully won't die on me during the weekend. I'll end up sitting in the parking garage in my cousin's car waiting for the dang phone to charge again.

10. Sleeping before midnight. Seriously. I am notorious for being such a granny even in Vegas. I know my cousins will kill me if I pull a granny on them and fall asleep before the night is just beginning (for them anyway). I'll just try to take a big nap around...8pm. Hah!

11. Getting annoyed with my brother. My brother can be a total snob about Vegas (he acts like he's the Vegas king) and he already told me that if things start to get lame, he and his gf are gonna break from the group and do their own thing. Okay, that's just not cool. This is our cousin's birthday celebration, and even though his friends aren't our close friends, we should be respectful. I swear, he better not get on my nerves.

12. My period. Due to my higher levels of stress with taking the exam, I think it's another off month for me, and I really hope that I don't get cramps. Oh period, please just don't come.

13. Being ditched at the strip club, then going to Venetian at 3am lookin toe up and having to accompany your friend's sister who decides to go up to some random stranger's presidential suite. *sigh* LOL, that one's for you Holly.

Eclipse is coming soon!
Wednesday, July 25, 2007

Eclipse, the third book (following Twilight and New Moon) in the vampire series by Stephanie Meyer, is released on August 7. I've already preordered my copy and have been anticipating the release for a long time (see the countdown on my sidebar). I stumbled upon an interview with Stephanie Meyer, through the Borders website. Check it out.....

You can skip ahead to different parts in the interview (it's rather long). I think I should've been invited to that discussion panel.. ya know... add a little variety to the group. :)

More Beckham to love
Friday, July 20, 2007

I just heard on the radio this morning that Beckham is going to have his own reality TV show. Honestly, I think it's kinda cheesy to be doing this... and I hope this doesn't intrude on his kids' lives, but I'm sure hundreds of women like myself will tune in to catch a glimpse of him.

From Goal.com.....

Victoria Beckham’s “Coming to America” special missed the mark with American viewers on Monday night. Now Fox Soccer Channel hopes to at least put a shot on frame by centering a reality show around her husband.
Not that he needs any more publicity for his well-documented signing with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, “David Beckham’s Soccer USA,” will debut next Wednesday (FSC, 9:00 p.m. ET).

Thirteen episodes will air between July 25 and October 17, documenting the English midfielder’s first four months with the Galaxy. “American Idol” producer Simon Fuller will be one of four producers of the show.

Beckham is currently nursing a swollen left ankle, which has limited his first week of training with the Galaxy. His status remains up in the air for the team’s game against Chelsea on Saturday night in the World Series of Football matchup.

The Galaxy are currently in fifth-place in the Western Conference with a 3-5-4 record (13 points). Due to Beckham’s signing this past January, the club has played less games than any of the other 12 teams in MLS, and will embark on a busy schedule that will see the Frank Yallop-coached side play 18 games between August 5 and October 21.

Thirteen Things I'm doing after my exam

First time doing this, and since I've thought of nothing all day but what I'd rather be doing than studying, here ya go:

    1. Vegas - My test should be done around 4pm, then it's back home to finish packing and on the way to the airport. My cousin is celebrating his 21st birthday, so all us cousins are going. I've gone to Vegas plenty of times, so I'm a little over it... but this will be the first time all us cousins are going and man, we've been waiting a long time for this one to hit 21. Let's see if I can actually stay awake past midnight in Sin City.

    2. Updating my blog - I really want to jazz it up some more, add more things to the sidebar, etc. Time for a new look.

    3. Visit Holly and Rowena more - I need more girl time and who better to share that quality time with than these two gals. I might've said I'd go to Magic Mountain with Holly, but we'll see...

    4. Read my next romance book - Sad to say, but I haven't read anything other than my study materials for quite some time now. Okay, not entirely true, but I'm averaging like 2 pages of romance reading time a night before I pass out and fall asleep with the lights on.

    5. Visit my brother's new place - My brother moved out like two weeks ago, and I still haven't seen his place. Granted, I haven't really received an invitation over there yet, which makes a little salty/hurt. He did say though that he's not fully moved in yet and doesn't want to bother me until after my test. Fair enough. *shrug*

    6. Go Swing Dancing - I haven't been social dancing in forever! I still go to the hour class on Sunday afternoon, but other than that, no dancing on Friday nights. Even with the live bands, I've been putting my foot down and refusing to go out. Instead, my Friday nights are spent with my virtual online instructor and self study CD roms. So yes, I will go dancing after this.

    7. Movies - Where do I begin? I'll just list the ones that are still/will be in the theaters that I might still be able to catch: Transformers, Die Hard, that Chuck and Larry movie.

    8. Shopping - I'm not much of a shopper, but I still have gift cards from my birthday a month ago. I know they don't expire in this state, but I don't want to just lose them and let them go to waste. Particularly, I have a Macy's gift card and some Barnes/Borders gift cards.

    9. Clean my room - With my brother finally gone, I have to take advantage of the extra closet space and move some of my junk to his closet. Will make my room look much less cluttered.

    10. Buy bookshelf - Similar to #9, sadly, I just keep all my books in Iron Mountain cardboard boxes in my room. There are about 6 of them, and it just clutters my room. With my brother's room vacant now and serving as a guest room, I can finally buy a bookshelf and keep my precious books there.

    11. Play with my Nintendo DS - Man, I got this for my birthday and I've only used it twice. Time to start playing again.

    12. Condo/house hunting - I've been putting off the open houses trips so that I can study. I'm not in a rush to move out (might upset my parents to leave so soon after my brother) but it's also time for me to really think about it along with my job. I see my brother and my cousin who have moved out and I think... man, I want to be a grown up too.

    13. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Nuff said. :)

I feel so used...LOL
Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Over the past year my coworker, Natalie, and I have become really good friends. I'm grateful to have met her and her roommate Caitlin, who doesn't work with us but does work for one of our clients. Last week while I was on vacation I had lunch with these two in Caitlin's company's cafeteria (pretty decent and cheap food). I forgot we audit her company, so of course we ran into some of my coworkers. At first they thought I had quit and was now working for the client, but I explained I was just having lunch with a friend who happened to work there.

Anyway, last night Natalie called me saying that Caitlin passed by the audit room and saw a really good looking guy from my office. I'm thinking say what? there's no good looking men in our office. Oh wait. It must be him. See, there's this really good looking staff in our office, who apparently is admired by all the staff. I had heard the rumors myself but just said meh I'll believe it when I see it. No joke, I first ran into this guy in the mailroom about two months ago, and I swear my jaw just dropped. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a crush on him or anything, but I can't deny that he IS good looking. I think he was a hair model or something. I would never go out with this guy or anything even if he is my age. He's ranked below me, hah there I said it. I'm a title snob.

So now Caitlin wants to have lunch with me today and sit near my office buddies so she can get a glimpse at her new eye candy. Oh dear. I guess the good news is that I already had lunch there last week, so it won't seem that weird to my coworkers if they see me again. But still, I can't help but feel like I'm a semi-stalker. At least I'm not the mastermind behind this operation, I'm just the accomplice. Man what is this? High school? Geez. I must be really craving some excitement in my life. And even though I say this is for Caitlin, and this is her eye candy... I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't mind taking a gander myself. =P

Studying Distractions and the end of my Chronicles of a Crush
Saturday, July 14, 2007
My next CPA exam is in two weeks. That's not much time people. I took an entire week off work to get more time to study because I refuse to walk into this exam knowing I didn't try my best. Knowing my own weakness, I've tried to stay away from home, in order to discipline myself and resist the temptation of taking "study breaks" (aka naps). This is how my study routine has been like during this last week: Morning - Since I'm a morning person my brain feels energized. I can tackle a ton of multiple choice questions during this time, since I'm wide awake. It also helps that everyone in the house has left for work. Afternoon - Now it's starting to get hot in my house. Even with the AC on, my laptop makes my desk really hot and the sun is blaring through my window. It's time to head to the library. I eat lunch then study at the library until about dinner time. Evening - After eating dinner and checking emails/playing on the internet, I get back into gear and study from about 9pm till 11pm.

Not a bad study schedule, I'd say. However, yesterday, nothing seemed to go according to plan. I had to pass by the office in the morning to do work related things, so that pretty much cancelled my morning studying. After lunch I headed over to the library. Upon setting up my area with my laptop, study materials, I realized that I forgot to bring my powercord. Crap, this now reduced my multiple choice question time to about 2 hours (the time my laptop battery usually dies on me). I try to slam through as many questions as I can, when all of a sudden I hear snoring. Incredibly loud snoring. I turn around and some old man is sitting in one of the big comfy chairs in the library, obviously in a deep slumber as indicated by the snoring.

I try to tune out the sound around me by putting on my headphones and playing some mellow music on my laptop. After another successful 10 minutes of answering questions I look up to see an old man searching for a book in the shelves in front of me. Okay, I really don't mean to offend, but the guy was a hunchback! Full on Quasi-Modo hunchback. I could not stop staring, and I know that sounds mean, but it's not every day I see that. Doesn't matter anyway, at this point my laptop died on me.

Later that evening I was studying again in my room when my phone rings around 10:30pm. I answer it and well whaddya know.... it's Rob my crush. I haven't really heard from him for a few weeks; the last time I saw him was at this BBQ he invited me to but ended up ditching me the entire night. I didn't blog about that night but that's pretty much the gist of it. So he's calling me from his car asking how I am, etc. After some small talk he then goes "So I wanted to let you know, that I'm giving a 15 minute presentation/talk at my church on Sunday and this might be a good time for you to come check it out and see me give my talk."

There it is people. I was wondering when I would get the church invite. In all honesty, I'm really not surprised, and I can't blame the guy for asking. For someone like him who is so involved with his church, naturally he wants to spread the message and reach out to others. Fair enough. I told him that I couldn't make it because of my swing dance class (which is totally true btw). Even if I was available, I probably would've thanked him for the invite but still said I wasn't interested. Besides, he said his topic was about the temple and asking yourself if you feel worthy to enter. Mmmkay. I don't think that would even apply to me in any way. Of course I'm not worthy to enter, I'm not a member of your church.

After that, he said his cell phone was dying and he left his car charger out of state while on vacation. I said "Okay, good luck then with your talk. Have a good weekend." That's pretty much it. You know, this may be the end of this crush, but I'm hoping it's not the end of our friendship (if you could even call it that). I really really hope that all this time, he's been thinking of me as a friend, as opposed to him being friendly in order to invite me to church. I'm moving on now, cross your fingers for me.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Wednesday, July 11, 2007
I don't do movie reviews too often, but I wanted to get all my thoughts on this one written since I just saw it this morning. First of all, I'm going to start by saying, I loved this movie. I thought it was true to the emotional content of the 5th book; which was very frustrating for me to read. If you are one of those people who have issues with movies not being exactly like the book... you might have some issues with this movie (kinda like how ppl complained about movie 4). There was so much other stuff going on in the book, I can't imagine fitting it all in the movie. I for one, don't really get that nit picky about it. As long as the movie in general was the same story, then I'm cool. Anyway, here's some aspects of the movie I want to address....

**********SPOILERS AHEAD**********

Haircuts: Yes! I think everyone looked so much better in this movie, Harry included. The whole long shaggy hair look was sooo not working for me in the last movie. I know this has nothing to do with the story, but aesthetically, it was great to see the boys looked good this time around.

Umbridge: I seriously hated this woman in the book, and I actually wasn't picturing her to be so... pink. I imagined her to have this evil look to her like the book illustration shows. So I am kinda relieved she wasn't as scary as I imagined. I think making her all pink and peppy in the beginning of the movie helped get us to gradually hate her. Well done to the director on this one.

Ron and Hermione: Ahh, their romance is blossoming now and I love it. They are definitely maturing in the story and it's great to see these two working together to help support Harry. I can't remember if they were prefects in this book, but I'm pretty sure they were and was a little bummed it wasn't mentioned in the movie.

Luna Lovegood: I kinda wished they had explained her dad's paper the Quibbler a little bit more in the movie. I guess it doesn't really affect the storyline, but I remember in the movie Luna said "I believe you, and so does my dad." So for me, I understood what she meant by that, but if I had never read the book, it seems kinda odd she would bring up her dad when we don't know what he has to do with any of it.

Harry and Cho: Now I know most people hate the Harry/Cho concept and are routing for him and Ginny. Me? When I first read these books, I really liked Harry/Cho. I was all excited when they went on their little date in Chapter 25 "The Beetle at Bay." I was a little surprised by their on screen kiss, because it was soooo long! It was like watching a make out session. Or maybe I'm just a tad jealous. Heh. Yes I know I'm wrong because Daniel Radcliffe is just a kid, but oh well. He's cute and I was jealous. So sue me. Anyway, I didn't really like how the movie played this one out. From what I recall in the book, Harry and Cho had a real attraction to each other, but by the time they went on their little date, it was kinda clear that she was feeling guilt over Cedric and their attraction was nothing more than that.. an attraction. She was also jealous of Harry and Hermione's relationship, which I kinda wanted to see that in the movie. All they did was pretty much kiss, then the relationship fizzled when Harry thought Cho betrayed Dumbledore's Army. I guess the movie produced the same result in the end, but I kinda wanted to see Cho get jealous over Hermione.

Snape's Memory: I'm really glad they kept this in the movie. It's crucial that we get some insight into Snape's past... it helps set up the storyline in book/movie 6. I dunno about you guys.. I'm still sticking behind my saying that "Snape is my hero!"

Sirius: Man, I knew he was going to die, but I didn't expect to hear the Avada Kedavra curse. Reason being is that I remember in the book, "the second jet of light hit him squarely on the chest." There was no mention in the book that it was the AK curse, just that he got hit by something and fell into the veil hanging in the archway. The whole debate after this book came out was if he was really dead. I was really hopeful that he was alive, but I guess the movie pretty much sealed the last nail in the coffin on that idea. By making it the AK curse in the movie... it's pretty much a done deal, Sirius is dead. Dang.

The End Battle and the Prophecy: The battle between Dumbledore and Voldy was awesome! It was exactly as I pictured it and really showed how powerful these two wizards are. I'm a little bummed that there was no connection/explanation made between the prophecy and Professor Trelawney. Makes sense since there was that dramatic scene of Dumbledore sticking up for Trelawney.

**********END OF SPOILERS**********

The end is approaching, and I'm both excited and scared to find out the end to this story. I felt so bad for Harry in this book, I remember crying reading it and I think the movie was just as intense. So go see it. If you're a fan and have seen all 4 movies.... you're going to watch this no matter what. If you aren't a big HP fan, I think it's still worth watching.

The Ick Factor
Sunday, July 08, 2007
My good buddy Siao and I were talking about dating and how it's so much harder to be the guy asking a girl out. You gotta give some guys props out there- the ones who at least have some courage. I mean, they put themselves out there, and totally take a risk at being rejected. I know a lot of times we girls don't even give the guy a chance. Yes, we have every right to say "no," it happens. But I think a mistake that some guys make is that when they finally do hear a "yes" response, they develop the ick factor.

What is the ick factor? It's the qualities that make you (the guy) look desperate, and slightly creepy. Let me give you an example. I knew this guy in college named George. He was a nice guy, able to carry conversation, and was pretty smart. The problem was that he hadn't had a girlfriend/date in a long time, and it was all he would ever talk about. The guy was always pointing out cute girls to me, but when I suggested he talk to them, he never would. Oh brother. One day he tells me he asked a girl from one of his classes out and she said yes. Okay, now this was promising. I thought maybe there's hope for him after all. But what does he do for their first date? Takes the girl to Disneyland, treats her to one of the fancy overpriced restaurants there, and gets her like a dozen roses. Yup. Ick factor. There it is.

Needless to say, the girl never requested a second date, and George was scratching his head wondering what happened and what he did wrong. Now before I dive futher, let me point out that I am not a dating expert. I'm a total newbie when it comes to dating. But I am a girl. Siao and I discussed this at length, he giving his perspective as a guy, me as a girl. It's easier said than done, but here are some tips I think might help guys out there like this:

1) Be confident. Girls can always tell when you lack confidence. I once had a guy ask me out and before I could explain my answer he said "It's a no huh? Is it because you don't think I'm attractive?" Umm... wtf?! That changed my tentative no answer to a definite no. So be confident. How do you develop confidence? Well, it helps when you know how much you have to offer someone and you know that a girl's "no" just means they are missing out.

2) If a girl says yes, don't freak her out by overdoing it. This means keeping the first date casual. Going all out kinda makes you look like you're so grateful someone said yes to you that you're desperately trying to hold on to it, as opposed to getting to know the girl a little more. Does this mean you can't give flowers? No, of course not. Just don't overdo it. So this will vary depending on the type of girl. The fancier the atmosphere, the more tense the date tends to get. I would keep it casual as much as possible, to allow more time to chat and be relaxed.

3) Follow up on her interests, but again, don't go overboard. I know this guy who has a bit of ick factor in him... he was in love with this girl who he knew loved stuffed animals. So what did he do? (true story, btw) He made her a teddy bear from scratch. Like literally learned how to sew, bought stuffing, etc. and tried to be his own "build-a-bear" workshop. I saw his bear project once, it was just the bear head, and omg it was creepy. I can't believe how much time/money he spent making that bear. So if a girl says she likes chocolate, okay fine you can buy her a small box of chocolate. But the minute you do anything that is out of the way, it's obvious you're either in love with the girl or just trying too hard. Save those kind of gifts for later as your relationship progresses.

4) Keep an open mind and be sociable. Most guys I know with the Ick Factor have this in common... they only go to social events when they know most of the people there or if they know a cute/hot girl will be there. This is a big no no. Why? Because you never know who you'll meet and how far networking can get you. So what if you didn't meet a cute girl that night; you might have met someone else, a potential friend who then invites you to something else where you'll meet more people. It's a domino effect. You never want to limit yourself to the same places with familiar faces, otherwise you won't ever meet anyone new.

So there you have it. I could probably go on and on, but these are just the basic points that came to my mind when I was talking with Siao. I don't think many guys will be seeing this, but it's also a good reminder for us girls. It can sorta work the same way for us I guess. For me, I'm working on number 4, trying to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. So if you know someone struggling with Ick Factors, this might be something to think about.
